Hole No.1 Mountain View, sponsored by Mervyn McNally.
This hole lives up to its name though the growing trees are quietly limiting the view of the mountains. When Tom Bell drove the first ball from Tee 1 the hole was a Par 4 hole of 420 yards. However, the club had a large number of inexperienced golfers who objected to scoring regularly no stableford points on the first hole. So it became a slightly longer, but less difficult, Par 5. Bunkers to the left ( which were removed and then in later years replaced) and to the right and a ridge in the middle ensure that putting will not be easy.

Hole No.2 Rere Atu, sponsored by Guthrey’s Travel Centre.
RERE means FLY and ATU means AWAY so FLY AWAY is a thoroughly suitable name for a long hole. Again the mountains are in view and again one bunker to the left and another to the right ensure that a golfer must be accurate. (this was one of the holes which had two greens)

Hole No.3. Glaswegian, sponsored by Gordon Greig who later became a President of the Club.
He called the hole ‘Glaswegian’ for the apt reason that he was born in Glasgow. The green demands care this time since it is narrow from front to back, has rough behind and a gully in the front. With a large willow to the right.

Hole No.4 Rangatira, sponsored by Barry Holmes (who had a construction company)
Rangatira may be translated as CHIEF or CHIEFTAIN. Certainly this was a lordly hole ranked as No.1 in difficulty for about 20 years and still is the longest fairway from the blue tees. The green has both a bunker and a boundary fence to the left as well as a gully on the right all combining to make approaches risky.

Hole No.5 Putney Heath, sponsored by Neville and Phyllis Theobald.
Neville was a Londoner who was evacuated to New Zealand in 1940. His childhood area in London was, as you have guessed, Putney Heath. This hole may be short with bunkers both left and right, with a gully in front and long grass at the back, any indiscretions have to be paid for.

Hole No.6, The Peaks.
Like Mountain View, The Peaks allows glorious sights of distant mountains for those willing to lift their heads (at the right time of course). The Peaks is the longest hole from the white, red and yellow tees but shorter that Rangatira from the blue tees. At the time of designing the course it was felt that no bunkers were needed for such distances (times and opinions have changes this and the hole now has three bunkers left and centre near the green and on the right near the gully) and the hump on the large green provides a challenge for putters.( this hump in the middle of the green was once the division between two greens). The low-handicap golfers, undeterred by length (even in nor-wester’s) felt that a water-hole in the gully might make the hole more demanding. However, the gully remains dry (as most of us breath a sign of relief) but a triangle of trees pokes out from the left not too far short of the gully, a further trial for the less-than competent.

Hole No.7 Precision, sponsored by Bob Wilkinson
The name ‘Precision’ was chosen as Bob sold Bernina Sewing machines which he maintained were ‘precision’ machines. The tee shot does need precision as there is a gully in front of the green, a bunker to the left on a downward slope and trees to the right.(this hole is another that once had two greens the disappearing green being on the left near the willows and water hole)

Hole No.8 Altair, sponsored by a local Motel that has changed ownership and now has a different name.
The sponsor knew that Altair had the advantage of appearing early in the alphabet and he appeared to believe that Altair was a star or constellation in the Milky Way, a supposition hard to confirm. The white tee was originally back where the blue tee now stands alone. Brent Paterson, a Coringa New Zealand amateur champion, has given an assurance that the present fairway is good with its challenging slope towards the trees on the right. With bunkers on both sides of the green.

The hole has a bend with a hillock and trees on the right and some more trees on the left.

Further on the green has a bunker on the left as well as one on the right. | 9th Hole

Hole No. 10 Harvin, sponsored by I.T.Harding who with Harvin made up the firm called Harvin who supplies irrigation equipment.
Harding and Vincent were responsible for installing the irrigation system on Coringa. The hole is nearly straight forward, there being a slight bend to the left. The green guardians are two bunkers lying in wait on the right hand side of the green. In more recent times another bunker has been established in the mound on the left.
Our gardeners have worked there magic around this tee to develop a garden for you to admire while you are waiting for your turn.

Hole No. 12 Dibbinsdale, sponsored by T.Devlin Associates
Terry chose this name as when he was courting in England , he often went down the Dibbinsdale Road. He was also responsible for initiating the system of hole sponsorship, and had first chance of naming a hole and, not surprisingly, called no.12 Dibbinsdale.
The hole begins with a gully (often called Ted’s (Days) gully) which is now much shallower with a better sole of grass than it was for many years, then becomes a reasonably straightforward hole until it ends with a large green with hungry bunkers to the left and right.

Hole No.13 The Pines, sponsored by the ladies section of Coringa Golf Club.
Pines line both sides of the fairway and have become the home of territorial magpies, vicious at certain times of the year. A large willow tree to the right plus bunkers to the left and right and a gully across the front of the green makes it that little bit more dangerous to attack.

Hole No. 14 Down Faulls, this name is reminder of the work of Reg Faulls who at one time or another held the office of both the President and Club Captain of Coringa.
The hole is fairly straightforward with the blue tee tucked well back between the Pines and the out of bounds fence with the out of bounds running all the way down the left hand side.
More recently additional mounds have been constructed along the right hand side making the fairway appear to be narrower.

Hole No. 15 Target, sponsored by R.H.Burgess.
Target is a long hole with a beneficially sloping green for those capable of hitting it at the right speed and trajectory. The idea of not having bunkers is acceptable to those off target.
Recently a fairway bunker has been installed to the left of the fairway where hopefully it will catch some of the low handicappers.

Hole No. 16 The Elbow, sponsored by G. and A. Harris. A sheet metal firm that made metal elbows.
The bend on the pump-house corner is nearly 90 degrees and a big bunker in front of the green and the one to the right ( now replaced with a mound) were designed to keep a golfer honest. The green has been re-designed but the awkward slope remains.

Hole No. 17 Nemesis sponsored by Noel Coulter whose business at the time was making springs.
Nemesis was a Greek goddess responsible for seeing that every man got his due and just deserts.
This is the second to last hole and has wrecked many a good card. For a golfer nearly finishing his round he may here get his come-up-pence. The great bunker in the front of the mound has gone (much to the delight of many higher handicappers and the ladies), but in its place a new bunker was formed on the right- hand side covering the front corner of the green. The left-hand bunker waits to trap the unwary on the other side.

Hole No. 18 Royden, sponsored by Norm and Dorothy Gardiner, they lived in Royd St. and their house is called ‘Royden.
The hole is a good driving hole and after reaching the gap in the trees and the gully there are three bunkers to content with two on the right and one on the left. Recently our green staff have constructed a new tee for the ladies which has slightly reduced the length of the hole.
Players on 9 and 18 greens are in full view of the clubhouse so, any careless shots are observed by the watching members enjoying themselves with the refreshments offered in the clubhouse.
